My name is Chris and I do a lot with software.
I live in the beatiful german town of Würzburg, where I studied computer science for both my bachelor's and master's degree since between 2017 and 2023.
In 2018, I was approached by two former classmates who had recently founded a b2b startup in the video marketing space. They were looking for a second developer who would build a usage-analytics page for their product. I agreed to join and started learning about web programming and hosting by creating a Django app and deploying it by hand on a virtual private server.
During the following months and years, my studies and startup work were in a kind of symbiotic relationship: I learned about theory at university and got practical experience by teaching myself everything required to bring our product to the next level. Of course, I was set back and failed frequently and the successes were far less common this way. But I also got to learn the "why" behind so much of how the landscape of software engineering looks like today.
To this day I still work at that startup and almost no week passes during which I don't get to challenge my opinions and values regarding the creation of software and that is what keeps me motivated. I do not know what there is to come but as long as I can learn from it, I will be looking forward to it.
